On July 2nd, Mondai House of AI will host the next TU Delft AI lunch with the topic: 'The unprecedented environmental impacts of AI: a transdisciplinary discussion'.

AI is often celebrated for its potential to solve global challenges like chronic diseases, economic revitalization, and climate change. However, this narrative often overlooks AI's significant environmental costs, including the demand for rare metals, high energy consumption, and impacts on land and water resources. For instance, Microsoft’s 2022 report showed a 34% increase in water use, reaching 1.7 billion gallons, due to AI services.

With the rapid expansion of data centers, these impacts are set to increase, threatening ecosystems globally.

Join a dynamic panel discussion where you will explore how the growing reliance on AI contributes to environmental degradation and what can be done in science, engineering, policy-making, and global politics to address these challenges. The aim is to bring together diverse disciplines and stakeholders to develop actionable strategies to mitigate AI's environmental footprint.
