ALSO FOR STUDENTS
Leiden Science’s monthly dose of research inspiration from our staff, for our staff and all other curious minds. On Tuesday 10 December, Rob van Nieuwpoort, Professor Efficient Computing and eScience, will give an interesting lecture!
Modern research heavily relies on advanced software for tasks like data analysis, visualization, and modeling. eScience focuses on developing and applying software across disciplines, combining data science, computational science, AI, and e-infrastructure to tackle challenges in fields ranging from astronomy to social sciences. Key issues include making solutions scalable, efficient, and sustainable, often requiring tailored adaptations for specific disciplines. Bridging the gap between fundamental computer science and practical applications is essential but challenging.
The benefits of eScience are vast. High-quality software enables breakthroughs, enhances research reproducibility, and increases efficiency by reusing generalized solutions. Recent applications of AI, like large language models, highlight its transformative potential.
