THESIS LAB 2024-2025: A JUST CLIMATE TRANSITION IN THE HAGUE
Climate change challenges The Hague to look into ways of how to handle the climate transition in a fair and just way in which all stakeholders participate in, and benefit of, the process and outcome. This raises questions about how climate justice can best be addressed, not only in the city itself, but also in relation to a wider global perspective.
Themes and Theses
In approaching the Climate Transition with all of its facets, The Hague is interested in exploring different perspectives and elements. Getting new perspectives could help the City in evaluating and developing its own policies and projects. We are interested in getting insights on different aspects, being:
- Multilevel governance: The link between local, national, European, and global governance modes and calls to just climate action.
- Legal/Juridicial perspectives: Legal instruments to ensure a just climate transition for four main stakeholders: the municipality, inhabitants, nature/ecosystems, and social entrepreneurs.
- Participation & language: ‘Speaking the right language’. Getting everyone involved to find the right and just solutions to the Climate Transition.
- Planning for Justice: the built environment, policy, planning & design: Policy, planning and design choices in the built environment for a just climate transition.
- Global justice: What roles can The Hague play on a global scale to ensure a just Climate Transition for all members of current and future generations, especially regarding social issues?

PROGRAM 2024/2025
From early February to early July, there will be eleven sessions, held every other week. You will engage in discussions with researchers, civil servants from The Hague, and professionals, participate in (an) excursion(s) in The Hague, and take part in workshops with fellow students and the other Thesis Labs. Collaboration with other students in this lab will support your learning process. You will work on your own thesis project and develop a joint final result with your fellow students, that you will hand over to the Municipality of The Hague during a final event. The program is conducted in English. Thesis projects can be written in English, but we encourage students to also summarize their most relevant findings in Dutch for the municipality of The Hague.

The Hague is the third city of The Netherlands, and positions itself on an international level as the City of Peace and Justice. The Hague has set the ambition to become climate neutral in 2030, and is one of the 100 European Cities in the mission 100 Climate Neutral and Smart Cities.
