Every second Wednesday, the Circular Industries Talks are organised at the Circular Industries Hub. On Wednesday June 14, Stef Lemmens, Assistant Professor Technology and Operations Management at the Rotterdam School of Management (Erasmus University Rotterdam), presented about his research. Closed-Loop Supply Chains and Circular Business models
The growing concern about scarcity of resources, pollution and emissions has increased the pressure on society to put more emphasis on sustainability development. From a company perspective there are several ramifications in terms of resource availability and costs, compliance with national and international legislation, and its perceived image to the outside world.
To sustain economically and ecologically viable operations one may have to thoroughly redesign existing supply chain processes, integrate new ones, and re-think the business model.
Product reuse and recycling (“closing the loop”) can seriously contribute to business value creation and the reduction of environmental footprints at the same time. However, to sustain economically and ecologically viable operations one may have to thoroughly redesign existing supply chain processes (manufacturing, holding inventories, distributions), integrate new ones (collection, recovery, redistribution) and re-think the business model (recycle, remanufacture, servitisation,…). This talk contributes to the understanding of the relevant trade-offs related to economic, ecologic, and social aspects of doing business, and to apply the necessary tools and concepts to tackle the challenges in trying to close the loop.

The Circular Industries talks
The goal of the Circular Industries talks is to share knowledge across Leiden, Delft and Erasmus and to complement and deepen the knowledge already available within the Circular Industries Hub. The talks are organized on Wednesday morning from 10:00 to 11:00. The talks are online (Microsoft Teams).
