The Circular Industries Talks are organized every second Wednesday at the Circular Industries Hub. In this edition, Mireille Reijme, Senior advisor Circular Economy and Waste Management at RWS, talks about Future proof design. Curious for more? Take a look at the recording at the bottom of this page.

Circular design is key for a green and just transformation.”
For a clean and competitive Europe it is essential to reduce pressure on our finite natural resources. Growth without increasing environmental impact ensure prosperity and wellbeing for humanity.
Circular design serves as a starting point for producers, consumers and material processors, prepares society for the future. This is essential for the transition to a circular economy in the Netherlands.
Value creation is possible by the four circular strategies, as defined in the Dutch national circular economy programme 2023-2030.
- Use less resources (narrow the loop).
- Extending the lifespan (slow the loop).
- Improved recyclability (close the loop).
- Use of sustainably produced materials (substitution)
Want to know how designers and companies are encouraged to develop product and services in line with these four strategies? Take a look at the recording below.
Mireille Reijme explains how regulation and standardisation are promoting future proof design.
Regulation like the Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation, Critical Raw Material Act and the battery regulation change the design requirements to prevent waste and maintain valuable resources for as long as possible. Furthermore standardization has been developed by the CEN-CENELEC Joint Technical Committee 10 on Energy-related products - Material Efficiency Aspects for Ecodesign , of which she is a member.
Besides standards for material efficiency of energy-related products, such as extending product lifetime, ability to reuse components or recycle materials from products at end-of-life, and use of reused components and/or recycled materials in products has been developed, recently a “Method to achieve circular designs of products" EN 45560:2024 has been published with principles, requirements and guidance.

The Circular Industries talks
The goal of the Circular Industries talks is to share knowledge across Leiden, Delft and Erasmus and to complement and deepen the knowledge already available within the Circular Industries Hub. The talks are organized on Wednesday morning from 10:00 to 11:00. The talks are online (Microsoft Teams).
