How sustainable is this small & off-grid house?

Graduation topic: research the environmental impact of self-sustaining architecture

Help Studio Walden to optimize their tiny house design by researching how sustainable this small and off-grid house is.

Who are you?

You are a graduating Master student, looking for a research project. You have interest in Life Cycle Assesments and sustainable architecture.

Who do we offer?

We offer a research position at Studio Walden, a design agency for small, self-sufficient architecture with an adventurous touch.

Studio Walden is interested in finding out more about the ecological impact of the materials used in a tiny house and its construction process. This also entails:

  • Gathering insights in the comparison between living in a tiny house and in a standard house.
  • Uncovering information on maintenance of a tiny house.
  • Researching what happens at the end of the lifecycle.

In short, the goal is to get a clear picture of what aspects in the life cycle of this type of housing have the biggest environmental impact, so that Studio Walden can optimize new designs to do even better.

Small house movement

This house is inspired by the tiny house movement, originating from the US. Living small generates more freedom, there is less junk in the house, less surface to clean and less worrying about high mortgage or rental costs. Even more, living small provides several ecological benefits as it needs less energy, and this specific design is build from bio-based materials.

Walden Studio

Walden Studio is a design agency for small, self-sufficient architecture with an adventurous touch, founded by two Architecture students from TU Delft; brother and sister Laurens and Lena van der Wal. They operate according to a simple philosophy: creating compact but adventurous architecture, to decrease ecological footprint and increase happiness at the same time. Their idea to build Rooftop Villages in Rotterdam made it to the finales of our Challenge Circular South Holland. Studio Walden and this specific design were broadcasted on Dutch television. You can watch the full episode of SBS6's 'Your Own Dream House' here (in Dutch).
