The Faculty of Science and Institute of Environmental Sciences is looking for:

PHD candidates on the subjects of Business modelling; reverse logistics; consumer behaviour; sustainable design; environmental and economic assessments via input-output analysis and LCA or policy for sustainability (1,0 fte)

Key responsibilities

Candidates are invited for 15 PhD positions (“Early Stage Researchers”) to be funded by the Marie-Sklodowska-Curie Innovative Training Network “Circ€uit”- Circular European Economy Innovative Training Network” within the Horizon 2020 Programme of the European Commission. “Circ€uit “ is a consortium of high profile universities, research institutions and companies located in the Netherlands, France, UK, Sweden and Norway. Two of these candidates will be appointed at Leiden University. PhD subjects range from business modelling, supply chain management, user behaviour, design methods, to quantitative methods for analysing environmental and economic benefits for societal change to circularity. The project collaborates with various industrial partners and the Ellen MacArthur foundation. Selection Criteria

• You have no more experience as 4 years after your MSc graduation at the intended moment of recruitment. Sent a copy of your MSc thesis that shows the graduation date in English; 
• Marie Curie Innovative Training Networks are a mobility scheme. Researchers are required to undertake trans-national mobility (i.e. move from one country to another) when taking up the appointment. At the time of selection by the host organisation, researchers must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in the country of their host organisation for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to their recruitment. Short stays, such as holidays, are not taken into account; 
• You must demonstrate that your ability to understand and express yourself in both written and spoken English is sufficiently high for them to derive the full benefit from the network training.

Terms and conditions

Candidates will be trained in the technical, scientific and business skills relevant for the circular economy, and will become highly sought-after experts for front-runner businesses and other organisations that will shape the change to a sustainable economy. You will carry out research at a home university, but intensively interact with other candidates in Circ€uit through joint research and participation in Summer and Winter Schools. The successful candidates will be appointed at one of the participating organisations in accordance with their rules and regulation.

Leiden University offers a full-time one year term position with the possibility of renewal based on need, funding and performance. Salary range from € 2,174.- to € 2,779.- gross per month (pay scale P, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities). 
Next to the salary a mobility allowance and, in specific cases, a family allowance is also offered. The guaranteed PhD funding from the EU is for 36 months. In addition to their individual scientific projects, all fellows will benefit from further continuing education, which includes internships and secondments, a variety of training modules as well as transferable skills courses and active participation in workshops and conferences.

Leiden University offers an attractive benefits package with additional holiday (8%) and end-of-year bonuses (8.3 %), training and career development and sabbatical leave. Our individual choices model gives you some freedom to assemble your own set of terms and conditions. Candidates from outside the Netherlands may be eligible for a substantial tax break.
