Join our new Thesis Lab and explore how The Hague, as the City of Peace and Justice, can lead a fair and just climate transition. We are looking for students who want to dive deep into this complex challenge and contribute to real-world solutions.
As climate change intensifies, The Hague faces the complex task of managing its climate transition in a way that is fair and just for all stakeholders. This includes not only the city’s inhabitants but also considers its global role as the City of Peace and Justice. Did you know that The Hague is home to more than 200 international organisations? And with the continuous influx of new international organisations and non-governmental organisations, this number is rising. Many perspectives and elements must be considered to make a fair and just climate transition.
But how will we achieve this? That is where you come in! Join us in the upcoming Thesis Lab “A Just Climate Transition within and beyond The Hague” 2024-2025, in collaboration with the municipality of The Hague, where the central question is: “How can The Hague approach the Climate Transition within the city, and beyond its borders considering its position as the City of Peace and Justice, in a fair and just way for all stakeholders?”
We are seeking thesis projects that address various aspects of this challenge, including:
- Multilevel governance: exploring the connections between local, national, European, and global governance models and their calls to action
- Legal/Judicial perspectives (municipality/inhabitants/nature/entrepreneurs)
- Participation & language: how do we involve communities that are hardest to reach for the municipality?
- The impact of The Hague’s policy choices in the built environment to ensure just and sustainable urban development?
- The role The Hague can play on a global level as the City of Peace & Justice
- Non-western perspectives, specifically related to The Hague’s colonial history
- Gender diversity on both a global and local scale

What is a Thesis Lab?
A team of 10 to 14 graduating students from various programs in South Holland work on a sustainability challenge from the municipality of The Hague. These students work on their own graduation project (within their program) and follow a six-month program between February and June 2025, consisting of 12 sessions where they delve deeper into the question: “How can The Hague approach the Climate Transition within the city, and beyond its borders considering its position as the City of Peace and Justice, in a fair and just way for all stakeholders?” The program includes, among other things, workplace visits, round table discussions with guest speakers, and workshops. During the final meeting, the students present their (collective) results.
